Full, Queen or King? How to Pick the Right Mattress Size for Your McAllen Home

7 min read

Every November, guest rooms across the Valley start earning their keep. Cousins drive up for Thanksgiving, the grandparents settle in for tamalada season, and somebody always ends up on the air mattress that's flat by 3 a.m. It's also when we hear the same question over and over in our McAllen showroom: what size do we actually need?

The honest answer depends on three things: who's sleeping in the bed, how they sleep, and how much floor you're willing to give up. Here are the real numbers, plus what we've learned helping Valley families get fitted at our store on North 10th Street.

What are the standard mattress sizes?

Standard U.S. mattress sizes are twin (38 x 75 inches), twin XL (38 x 80), full (54 x 75), queen (60 x 80), king (76 x 80) and California king (72 x 84). Exact measurements can vary by about an inch between brands. A queen is the usual starting point for couples, and a king gives each sleeper the most room.

Twin XL38 x 80n/a8 x 10 ftTall teens, college dorms, split king setups

King76 x 8038 in12 x 12 ftCouples who want space, kids and pets who climb in

Room sizes are general guidelines that leave walking space around the bed. Measure your own room before you shop.

A split king is two twin XL mattresses on two adjustable bases.

Is a queen big enough for two adults?

For most couples, yes, but it's snug. A queen is 60 inches wide, so each person gets 30 inches. That's only a little wider than a crib mattress. If either of you sprawls, sleeps hot, or wakes up every time the other one rolls over, those 30 inches start to feel small.

That second point comes up a lot in McAllen. Two people on a queen share a lot of body heat, and our nights stay warm well into the fall. Sleeping hot is one of the most common complaints couples bring to us. A few extra inches between you is one of the simplest ways to cut down on shared warmth. The other is the mattress itself, since some materials hold heat more than others, and that's something a Sleep Coach can walk you through.

Here's a quick test you can do on any bed at home. Both of you lie on your backs with your hands behind your heads. If your elbows touch, or one of you is already near the edge, it's worth looking at a king.

How much bigger is a king than a queen?

A king is 16 inches wider than a queen (76 vs. 60 inches) and the same 80 inches long. That works out to 38 inches per person, the same width as a twin. In fact, a king is basically two twin XLs side by side. Plan on a room around 12 x 12 feet to fit one comfortably.

A king makes sense if the kids or the dog end up in your bed on Saturday mornings, if you and your partner keep different hours, or if one of you is a restless sleeper. It also opens up a split king, which is two twin XL mattresses on two adjustable bases. Each side can raise and lower on its own, and each person can pick the feel that's right for their body.

Worried about the price jump? Snooze Mattress offers King for Queen pricing on select mattresses, so moving up a size doesn't always mean paying more. Ask a Sleep Coach which models qualify.

King vs. California king: which one fits better?

A California king is 4 inches longer than a standard king (84 vs. 80 inches) and 4 inches narrower (72 vs. 76). It's made for tall sleepers whose feet hang off the end of a regular bed. If nobody in your house is over about 6 feet, a standard king gives you a little more total sleeping surface and wider sheet choices.

One thing people forget: king and California king sheets aren't interchangeable. If you switch, budget for new sheets and a new mattress protector.

How long is a full bed, and who is it for?

A full bed, also called a double, is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long, the same length as a twin. That's 5 inches shorter than a queen, so anyone taller than about 5'10" may find their feet near the edge. A full works best for one adult, a teenager, or a small guest room that usually hosts one person.

Two adults can share a full, but they'll each get about 27 inches. That's fine for a weekend visit. Night after night, most couples find it tight.

What size mattress works for a guest room or a multigenerational home?

If your guest room hosts couples and is at least 10 x 10 feet, a queen is the safest choice. If it's smaller, or usually hosts one person, a full leaves more floor space. And if a parent or grandparent lives with you full time, treat their bed like a primary bed, not a guest bed.

That last situation is common here. Pew Research found that 26% of Hispanic Americans lived in multigenerational households in 2021, compared with 18% of the overall U.S. population. In a lot of Valley homes, the "guest room" is really abuela's room. When that's the case, think about more than size. Mattress height matters for getting in and out of bed easily, and an adjustable base can make it simpler to sit up to read or watch TV.

Setting up for the season? If you're a Winter Texan furnishing a park model or RV, measure before you shop. Many RVs use a "short queen" that's 60 x 74 inches, which is 6 inches shorter than a standard queen.

How do you know what fits your body, not just your room?

Size is half the decision. The other half is support: how the mattress holds your shoulders, hips and lower back in the position you actually sleep in. Two mattresses can be the same size and feel completely different to a side sleeper and a back sleeper.

That's why every fitting at Snooze Mattress in McAllen starts with Dream Mapping, our pressure mapping technology. It uses thousands of sensors to show where your body needs support, and it takes just a few minutes. Couples can be mapped too, so each of you can see what your body needs before you pick a bed you'll share. If you're curious about the science, here's how Dream Mapping works.

You'll find queen, king and California king options across the mattresses we carry in McAllen, from Tempur-Pedic and Stearns & Foster to Beautyrest and Sealy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but each person gets about 27 inches of width, which is less than a twin. It works for short visits. For everyday sleep, most couples are more comfortable on a queen or king.

A split king is two twin XL mattresses (38 x 80 inches each) placed side by side to make a 76 x 80 king. It's usually paired with two adjustable bases, so each sleeper can choose their own position and mattress feel.

Usually, yes. A 76-inch-wide king in a 144-inch-wide room leaves about 34 inches on each side, enough for walking space and small nightstands. Measure doors and hallways too, so you know the mattress can get into the room.

Measure wall to wall in both directions, then subtract space for nightstands and dressers. Aim to keep about 24 to 30 inches of walking space on the sides and foot of the bed. Write the numbers down and bring them with you when you shop.

Yes. Sheets, mattress protectors and comforters are sized to the mattress, so a move from queen to king (or king to California king) means new bedding. Check the pocket depth on fitted sheets too, since many newer mattresses are thicker than older ones.

Not overall. A California king is 4 inches longer but 4 inches narrower than a standard king, so it has slightly less total surface. It's the better choice for tall sleepers; a standard king is better for couples who want more width.
